What and How  Hummingbirds Eat

Picture
Hummingbird Lapping Nectar From a Flower
Because hummingbirds have the highest metabolism of all animals while in flight (with the exception of insects) and are almost always in flight, they must constantly eat to achieve the goal needed for survival of about twice their own body weight in nectar and insects. To recieve nectar from a flower or other source, they would lap the nectar with their tounges rather than sucking the nectar out as most people believe. Though because nectar has such a low nutrition value, they will feed off of small insects to aquire the needed nutrients for their lifestyle.
